Seasonal fruit, winter edition

Three things I love about winter:

The diospyros virginiana, punica-granatum, the citrus reticulata.

More commonly known as:

Persimmons, pomegranates, mandarin oranges.

... how exotic did that sound though? I think I need to learn the scientific names to all fruits. What do you think? Useful or useless information?

These wonderful fruits are generally available year round, but they come out in full force in December. It is a time that I stock up on their deliciousness!!!!

If you haven't tried persimmons because they look too much like a yellow tomato... don't be fooled, they are so delicious, quite nutritious, and have a realllyyyyyyy fun chewy/crunchy texture!!!! High in dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, B-complex vitamins (to name a few!!!!) read up more: HERE.

Then we have... the almighty pomegranate. Many people are scared or intimidated by this tough skinned fruit. But it is filled with fun after the little bit of hard work. Don't fret people, it is well worth the time and effort it takes to remove pomegranate seeds. My suggestion: take out 10-15 minutes out of your day with two bowls, a comfy chair, some Nuevo Flamenco tunes (optional), and your pomegranate. You have to literally put yourself in the mind-set that you will be having one-on-one time with this entity. It is a rich source of soluble and insoluble dietary fibers, which aid in smooth digestive and bowel movements (tee hee hee). The fruit is suggested by nutritionists in the diet for weight reduction and cholesterol controlling programs. It also boosts immunity, improves circulation, and offers protection from cancers. It is also rich in... your B-Complex vits!!!!! Lets just say... it's awesome... and for those lazy @$$ folks out there... someone did the work for you. You have no excuse.

Finally we have mandarin oranges. There's nothing NOT to like about them. They are SO easy to peel, you can have 5 without feeling sick, feeling extra healthy, and guilt free.  It is like eating sweet water in a juicy fun form!!!! They are no mess annnddddd you can throw the peel in the bush on the sidewalk. Plus you know you're getting your much needed vitamin C during the cold winter months. Overdose in mandarins- you heard it hear, you heard it now. For more info: C L I C K.
